DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for providing educational instruction in academic subject areas to residents of the Hillbrook Detention Center. The work is performed by supporting online, grade level courses and evaluating the residents performance and progress in accordance with the New York State curriculum. Teachers deal with residents having a broad range of aptitudes, abilities, social and academic backgrounds and ages in addition to behavioral or emotional struggles. General supervision is received from the Education Supervisor (Hillbrook). Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Supports residents in academic studies utilizing appropriate teaching techniques with concern for overall course objectives..

Assists residents with online lessons and assignments.

Motivates and encourages participation of each student using appropriate teaching techniques and a display of enthusiasm for education.

Provides individual attention and assistance to meet the differing abilities of students, which includes accomodations/modifications required through IDEA.

Conducts inventories and determines needs for program related supplies and equipment such as texts, review books, workbooks, teaching aids and materials.

Completes necessary paperwork with regard to classroom instruction and behavior.

Creates monthly progress reports and quarterly report cards for each resident.

Creates course completion awards for online courses.

Good knowledge of the theory, principles and techniques of teaching.

Good knowledge of middle and high school core courses.

Good knowledge of Hillbrook Detention Center's policies and procedures.

Good knowledge of online education programs.

Ability to utilize effective behavior and classroom management strategies.

Ability to motivate and develop effective relationships with students.

Ability to apply different teaching strategies to meet specific teaching situations.

Ability to support residents with online courses.

Ability to evaluate and record student performance and progress.

Ability to verbally communicate ideas effectively to students.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

*Possession of a permanent or professional New York State teaching certificate in one of the following areas:

 

 

*NOTE:

Loss of certification will result in termination of permanent appointment. A permanent teaching certification must be obtained within the time limitations set by the New York State Education Department or appointment will be terminated.  Initial certification requirement may be waived for a set period of time as approved by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services.
