DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The Coordinator of Student Support Services serves as a key member of a school district, responsible for the planning, implementing and evaluating of comprehensive student support programs designed to promote overall student well-being, academic success and equitable access to educational opportunities. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Chief of Student Support Services and Assistant Superintendent of Student Support Services, with leeway allowed in carrying out the details of the work. Supervision is not a function of this class. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Creates and manages district-wide student support initiatives, including mental health services, counseling, social-emotional learning (SEL) and crisis intervention in accordance with prescribed criteria and guidelines.

Collaborates with school administrators, counselors and outside agencies to support student services initiatives.

Provides leadership and guidance to school-based support staff including counselors, psychologists and social workers to assist with the implementation of student support initiatives.

Ensures compliance with federal, state and local regulations related to student services, such as Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), McKinney-Vento Act, Section 504, etc.

Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of student support programs and recommends improvements when needed.

Acts as a liaison between schools, families, and community organizations to coordinate services.

Facilitates professional development and training for staff on topics such as trauma-informed practices, equity and student wellness.

Advocates for the needs of all students, particularly those who are at-risk, experiencing homelessness, or facing barriers to learning.

Assists school support teams with developing and implementing individualized support plans to meet the needs of at-risk students.

Maintains accurate records and prepares reports for district leadership and external agencies.

Good knowledge of the school district’s policies, procedures and protocols.

Good knowledge of NYS laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures relevant to student support services.

Good knowledge of community agencies and their services and programs available to students in need of additional resources.

Ability to create, manage, and monitor the effectiveness of student support initiatives.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, school personnel and external agencies.

Ability to organize and operate professional development training to school staff on related topics.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to prepare reports and complete documentation.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree and three (3) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, planning, coordinating, or directing youth support services in an educational setting.
