DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for developing and implementing a comprehensive citizen preparedness program. Work will include research and development of materials based on the community’s hazard vulnerability assessment. This will include public outreach at community events and digital promotion of the program. The incumbent will also work with all programmatic areas of the department to improve stakeholder engagement through communications with local governments, first response organizations before during and after emergency situations. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the Commissioner of Emergency Management. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Coordinates citizen preparedness initiatives with internal and external stakeholders.

Assists with communication with local government and first response organizations before, during and after emergency situations.

Promotes citizen preparedness and community outreach through electronics mediums, including websites and social media and in person presentations.

Researches and promotes best practices for citizen and community preparedness initiatives.

Participates in community based citizen preparedness and safety events.

Prepares exhibits and other public displays for presentations.

Collects, assembles and compiles information on departmental activities to promote departmental initiatives.

Assists officials and staff in editing articles, correspondence and other outreach efforts.

Monitors the website in a proactive manner to ensure that information is accurate, content is current and pages are free of errors.

Develops and collaborates on web content, exhibit designs, booklets, pamphlets, flyers, and articles for public distribution.

Responds verbally and in writing to requests for information from individuals and groups.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree and one (1) year of full time professional-level work experience, or its part time equivalent, in marketing, journalism, communications or community relations; or,
  1.  Five (5) years of full time paraprofessional or professional-level work experience, or its part time equivalent, one (1) year of which must have been professional level work experience in marketing, journalism, communications or community relations.
