DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves the performance of supportive service functions associated with the maintenance of various Social Services Programs. Work is performed under the supervision of a Senior Caseworker or Case Supervisor Grade B. Certain assignments made to employees in this class will require reasonable access to transportation to meet fieldwork requirements made in the ordinary course of business in a timely and efficient manner. Incumbents must successfully pass a background check. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists in interviewing applicants and referrals for child care, foster care adoption, preventative services or other services of the department.
Assists in the review of cases periodically to determine changes affecting client circumstances and need for services.
Assists in coordinating a visitation plan, which may involve the supervising and transporting of children for visits and appointments, as well as establishing suitable locations for such visits.
Documents interactions with clients and children and collateral information on cases, and performs written work as directed.
Assists parents, foster parents and caretakers with providing position experiences for their children, and assists with transportation as directed.
Prepares appropriate information for client files, court proceedings and other casework/CPS-related events.
Provides backup assistance to the department in covering in-house and in-territory client-related events, such as remanding children into care, overseeing children while parents are interviewed or taking/retrieving information to/from agencies.
Provides case-related and/or program-related information in associated meetings and conferences.
Assists other staff with assessing the needs of clients and their children.
Performs clerical and unit-specific tasks as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of interviewing techniques.
Good knowledge of the services provided by the agency.
Ability to summarize pertinent facts and observations in narrative report form.
Ability to deal effectively and with objectivity with clients of diverse socio-economic backgrounds and cultures.
Ability to follow oral and written directions.
Ability to work with complex systems.
Good organizational skills.
A) Completion of sixty (60) semester credit hours of study at a regionally accredited or New York college or university; or,
B) Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and two (2) years experience which involved coordinating a human services program.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Possession of a valid New York State driver’s license appropriate to the vehicles operated or otherwise demonstrate their ability to meet the transportation needs of the job.
