DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for crisis intervention in an education program for at-risk students. The incumbent is part of the District Response Team within the Syracuse City School District and is responsible for supervising students in crisis and providing immediate intervention and support services when incidents occur. Under general supervision of the Director of Student Support and Intervention, an employee in this class is allowed considerable leeway to exercise independent judgement in determining appropriate methods to identify and address crisis situations promptly and effectively in accordance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Supervision of subordinate employees is not usually performed by employees in this class. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES.
Provides immediate intervention services to students experiencing crisis situations in accordance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures for the purpose of de-escalating volatile situations, resolving issues, and ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff.
Assists with assessing students’ behavioral or mental health status and risk factors by utilizing evidence-based screening tools and protocols.
Assists with conducting thorough investigations into reported crises, gathering relevant information from various sources including students, teachers, parents, and external agencies.
Performs record keeping and clerical functions by maintaining accurate and detailed documentation of all incident reports, assessments, and follow ups while adhering to established protocols and confidentiality standards.
Collaborates with school staff, community agencies and external service providers to develop individualized care plans for students in crisis.
Coordinates referrals to mental health professionals, community resources or emergency services as needed for ongoing support and treatment.
Acts as an advocate for students within the educational and social services systems.
Attends in-service training programs to keep abreast of crisis intervention management techniques.
Coordinates with local law enforcement and community agencies to provide workshops to school staff, students, and families on related crisis intervention strategies, techniques and resources.
Utilizes appropriate methods of communication with persons of all ages and from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, educational, racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations, lifestyles and physical abilities.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of NYS laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures relevant to individuals in a school setting experiencing mental health, drug and/or alcohol abuse crises.
Thorough knowledge of crisis assessment, intervention, and prevention techniques.
Thorough knowledge of the community agencies and their services and programs available to students in need of additional resources.
Ability to organize and operate training programs to school staff, students, and families on related crisis strategies, techniques and resources.
Ability to prepare reports and complete documentation.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
Ability to remain calm in high-stress situations.
Ability to establish trust and encourage cooperation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with a Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a Human Services related field, or;
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a Human Services related field and two (2) years of professional-level experience working in crisis intervention, case management, or social services, or;
Six (6) years of professional-level experience working in crisis intervention, case management, or social services.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS
When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
