COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT SPECIALIST (BOCES)

The Program Coordinator will play a key role in fostering relationships between the Mid-State Regional Bilingual Education Resource Network (RBERN) and community-based organizations, focusing on supporting the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Youth Leadership Institute (PRHYLI) – Syracuse Delegation. This role involves recruiting and supporting students and parents, building a robust alumni network to promote civic engagement and advocacy, and providing ongoing support for delegates’ projects. The specialist will lead and support special events and initiatives aimed at enhancing community involvement, strengthening parent and family outreach, and promoting partnerships with local agencies. Additionally, the specialist will manage social media content and outreach initiatives to foster deeper community connections and ensure effective communication with diverse audiences.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Support for PRHYLI – Syracuse Delegation:
- Recruit and support students and parents: Engage with schools, community organizations, and families to recruit students.
- Provide guidance and mentorship throughout the selection process to ensure successful participation and ongoing support for students and parents.
- Build and maintain a strong alumni network: Develop strategies to keep PRHYLI alumni connected through events, reunions and inititives. Foster a sense of community to promote civic engagement, leadership and advocacy among former participants.
- Provide ongoing guidance and support for PRHYLI delegates: Offer continuous feedback and resources to help PRHYLI delegates succeed in their leadership projects and initiatives. Mentor them in leadership development, project management, and advocacy efforts.
- Lead and assist with special events and projects: Organize and execute workshops, conferences and leadership programs that promote student achievement and civic engagement. Manage logistics, communicate with stakeholders and ensure events align with PRHYLI’s goals.
Community and Parent Engagement:
- Foster relationships with community-based organizations and local agencies: Build partnerships with local agencies and organizations to expand resources for students and families. Act as a liaison to strengthen collaboration, sharing resources and organizing joint initiatives.
- Lead and support community outreach efforts: Design and implement outreach strategies to engage families in educational, cultural and advocacy activities. Work closely with local leaders to increase awareness of available resources and services.
- Organize and facilitate special events focused on parent and community involvement: Plan and host events that foster parent and family involvement, such as workshops, cultural celebrations, and informational sessions. Collaborate with community partners to ensure events are inclusive and responsive to diverse family needs.
- Develop and manage social media content: Create and manage social media campaigns to increase visibility of Mid-State RBERN’s initiatives and engage the community. Monitor and adjust content based on analytics to ensure effective communication and outreach.
FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
- Good knowledge of working with English as a Second language learners and their families as demonstrated in oral and written communication skills.
- Good knowledge of working collaboratively with people of different backgrounds.
- Good knowledge of successful interpersonal skills that will enable the candidate to communicate and work collaboratively with administrators, staff, students, teachers, families, and other stakeholder groups.
- Good knowledge of developing and managing social media content and platforms and collaboration tools.
- Good knowledge of working on equity, advocacy, or related projects.
- Ability to analyze data and making data-driven decisions.
- Experience working with community and advocacy organizations.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a Baccalaureate Degree.
