DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

The work involves responsibility for crisis intervention in an education program for at-risk students. The incumbent is responsible for supporting the District Response Team by coordinating with staff, security, and local law enforcement agencies to facilitate intervention and prevention services to students experiencing crisis situations in accordance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures. Under supervision of an administrative superior, an employee in this class coordinates with local law enforcement and community agencies to provide crisis intervention, prevention, and training services to staff, parents, and community organizations to enhance the safety and well-being of students within the Syracuse City School District. Supervision of subordinate employees is not usually performed by employees in this class. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

Assists the District Response team with students experiencing crisis situations by facilitating appropriate intervention and prevention services in accordance with all applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures for the purpose of addressing and resolving issues.          

Provides individual counseling and support to students and parents and, when necessary, may provide referrals to additional service providers.

Performs record keeping and clerical functions by maintaining necessary documentation, data entry, and records, both confidential and non-confidential in nature, in accordance with program requirements.

Attends in-service training programs to keep abreast of crisis intervention management techniques.

Coordinates with local law enforcement and community agencies to provide workshops to school staff, students, and families on related crisis intervention strategies, techniques and resources.

Acts as a liaison between the school, home, law enforcement and other community agencies for the purpose of facilitating communication and providing information to all involved parties.

Maintains a visible, accessible presence on campus.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Good knowledge of NYS laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures relevant to individuals in a school setting experiencing mental health, drug and/or alcohol abuse crises.

Good knowledge of crisis assessment, intervention, and prevention techniques.

Good knowledge of the community agencies and their services and programs available to students in need of additional resources.

Ability to prepare reports and complete documentation.

Ability to maintain confidentiality.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Ability to establish trust and encourage cooperation.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university with an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice, Political Science, Social Science, or a related field, or;

 

  1. Two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, working with at-risk youth in the area of violence prevention in an education, law enforcement or related setting.

 

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIEMENT

When required to operate motor vehicles, candidates must possess a valid New York State driver's license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
