DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for planning and designing landscape development and site improvement projects.  Oversees the development, rehabilitation and maintenance of outdoor spaces and other open areas such as parks, exterior landscaping around buildings, historic sites, recreational facilities, gardens and playgrounds.  Supervision is not a function of this class .  Work is carried out under the administrative supervision of the Commissioner of Parks and Recreation.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

        Serves as lead designer for landscape architecture projects of appropriate complexity, and provides support on other design projects.

        Investigates and proposes solutions to relevant problems of grading, spatial organization and site utilization.  Prepares suitable graphics and presentations to communicate design intent.

        Utilizes AUTOCAD and other software; prepares and/or manages the preparation of contract drawings.

        Develops specifications, cost estimates and estimates of quantities for the proposed work.

        Manages an interdisciplinary project team to ensure timely completion of work.

        Obtains all necessary internal and external approvals for proposed designs.

        Presents projects to other governmental agencies and departments, contractors and their representatives, consultants, community members and the general public.

        Reviews sites and designs with construction and maintenance personnel.

        Monitors progress of construction by reviewing and approving shop drawings.  Conducts occasional site inspections for quality assurance.

 

       

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

        Thorough knowledge of  project/designing ability in landscape architect work.

        Strong skills in AUTOCAD, Photoshop, PowerPoint, SketchUp and other computer skills.

        Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

        Strong knowledge of sustainable and universal design principles.

        Ability to establish effective working relationships with co-workers, superiors, contractors and the public.

        Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

        Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.

       

       

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Open Competitive: 

  1. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning, or a closely related field; or,
  2. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor's degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning or a closely related field and two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent in landscape planning, design or construction; or,
  3. Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate's degree in Landscape Architecture, Planning or a closely related field and four (4) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in landscape planning, design or construction; or,
  4. Six (6) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in landscape planning, design or construction.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT:  When required to operate motor vehicles, possession of a valid New York State driver's license appropriate to the type of vehicle being operated.  Licensure must be maintained throughout the course of employment.
