DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

Under supervision, an employee in this class supervises and participates in routine manual work involving building cleaning and related activities in a public building. An individual in this position may be a crew chief on a night shift. Work is not constantly reviewed or checked, but supervision is normally available when needed. Immediate supervision is exercised over a small number of Custodial Worker I's. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Supervises and participates in tasks such as scrubbing, mopping, waxing, sweeping and polishing floors.

Supervises and participates in the cleaning and moving of furniture and equipment.

Supervises and participates in the collection and disposal of paper and rubbish.

Supervises and participates in the refill of soap, toilet tissue and paper towel containers.

Makes out work and time schedules and keeps simple records.

May change filters on HVAC equipment and make minor adjustments.

May order and keep simple inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment.

May secure building at the end of an assigned shift.

May orient and train subordinate custodial personnel.

May operate and clean refuse incineration equipment.

May utilize manual cleaning tools and mechanized cleaning equipment, such as vacuum cleaners and mechanized floor cleaners.

May change light bulbs and make minor adjustments to light fixtures.

May load and unload delivery trucks, transport supplies to proper areas, or assist in the handling of bulky or heavy articles.

May wash windows, blinds, woodwork, toilets, washrooms and fixtures and police outside property to keep free from trash and refuse.

May cut grass, rake grass and leaves, and maintain landscaped areas.

May clear snow and salt walkways, driveways and parking areas.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment commonly used in custodial work.

Some knowledge of the operations of heating and ventilating systems.

Ability to supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability to understand and follow written or oral instructions.

Sufficient physical strength and agility to perform a variety of routine custodial tasks.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

One year of full-time, or its part-time equivalent, experience in building cleaning activities.
