DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for performing semi‑skilled mechanical work in the installation, testing and repair of residential and commercial water meters. Standard hand and power tools are used in the work. This class differs from that or the Water Meter Repair Worker I in that its primary function involves the maintenance and repair of highly complex industrial water metering devices. Supervision is received from a Water Meter Repair Supervisor or other maintenance supervisor who allows the incumbent to work independently with occasional review of work in progress, or on more complex assignments. Supervision is not typically a function of an employee in this class. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Installs new water meters for industrial users involving cutting and threading pipes, making coupling with meter, testing system for pressure leaks and testing the meter for proper recording of water flow.

Removes meters by disconnecting couplings, removes meter and cap pipes, and installs meter by pass when necessary.

Uses standard tools and special testing material to repair and test commercial meters at their location.

Performs pressure complaint tests involving disconnecting meter, inserting testing device and taking and recording readings.

May maintain records on services and meters connected or replaced.

May estimate costs and extent of repairs on meters to determine the cost effectiveness of replacement or repair.

May read meters when required.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE, KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Thorough knowledge of the operation, maintenance and testing of water meters and their internal mechanisms.

Good knowledge of the methods/tools used in the repair of small mechanism.

Skill in the use of standard tools of the trade.

Skill in mechanical repairs.

Mechanical aptitude.

Ability to read meters, use measuring devices and test equipment.

Ability to maintain records.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

A. One (1) year of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in water meter repair or replacement operations; or,

 

B. Two (2) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in the repair of small mechanisms or electric appliances, such as motors, kitchen appliances or related mechanisms, at least six (6) MONTHS of which must have involved water meter repair or replacement.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIRMENT

 

When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non‑CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.
