DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for supervising and leading a crew in the erection, installation and maintenance of overhead and underground electric power lines for a municipally owned electrical department. This work involves supervision of the operations of erecting transmission and distribution lines, poles, power transformers, crossarms, guys and similar equipment. An employee in this class works with a crew and has responsibility for the efficient and safe execution of the duties assigned. Supervision is received from the Electric Department Superintendent who plans and directs all activities of the Electric Department. Direct supervision is exercised over Line Workers and Line Worker Helpers. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Assigns work to crew members providing sufficient instructions and supervision to assure the safe and efficient execution of duties assigned.

Directs and leads in the installation and replacement of power poles, guys, crossarms, anchors, transformers and similar equipment.

Directs and leads in the installation of street light wires.

Supervises and participates in the installation of underground and overhead power lines and service lines.

Supervises and participates in the hookup of transformers.

Assures that safety procedures are understood and are strictly adhered to.

Orients new employees to job duties and safety procedures.

Answers emergency trouble calls.

Keeps daily time and materials records.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Thorough knowledge of the theory and principles of electricity and electric distribution systems as they relate to small, municipally-owned electric departments.

Thorough knowledge of standard safety measures and devices in handling high voltage electric circuits.

Skill in the use of tools and equipment of the trade.

Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.

Ability to understand and follow both verbal and written instructions.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotion:

Two (2) years of permanent non-competitive class status in the title of Line Worker.

 

Open-Competitive:

Four (4) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, as a Line Worker or Electrician in a power distribution system.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT:

When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicles (s) being operated.
