DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for performing semi-skilled electrical repair and maintenance tasks in the trouble-shooting, correction or adjustment of electrical problems, complaints and service requests from consumers in an electric power distribution system. The work is both technical and manual in nature and requires the incumbent to respond to emergency service or complaint calls at any time of the day or night. An employee in this class is also responsible for assisting a line crew in servicing power distribution lines and related equipment. Work is performed under the general supervision of a Line Leader, another supervisor, or the Superintendent with some leeway permitted for the exercise of independent judgment. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Installs, removes and replaces electric meters from residential and commercial consumers; executes monthly readings of meters.

Shuts off electric service for non-payment of bills.

Checks on consumer complaints of low and high voltage.

Determines where electric service entrance attachments are to be located on buildings.

Shuts off and turns on electric service as required for major and minor system maintenance and repair.

Assists line crew as required.

Repairs and replaces traffic light signals.

Operates and sets controls for Load Tap Chargers and regulators, along with other substation equipment.

Performs underground locating.

May operate a truck in performance of duties.

Performs certification of hazard assessments daily.

Replaces nitrogen gas bottles on equipment as needed and re-order.

May assist vendors working at substations.

Makes reports of equipment abnormalities to superintendent.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and applicable codes and equipment used in the installation, maintenance and repair of electric meters, traffic lights, substation equipment, and similar equipment.

Good knowledge of standard safety precautions used in the electrical trade.

Skill in the use of hand and powered tools and equipment used on the job.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to deal with consumers in a tactful and courteous manner.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

A. Two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the installation, maintenance or repair of electrical systems and equipment; or,

 

B. Two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in mechanical maintenance activities in the operation of a municipal electric system.

 

Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university or its equivalent in technical or apprentice training, in electronic or electrical engineering technology or engineering or technical curriculum which is related to the maintenance or repair of electric equipment of all voltages, may be substituted on a year for year basis.
