DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for supervising a small number of crews and their crew leaders engaged in groundskeeping, vehicle and equipment maintenance, and some building cleaning for a public housing authority. An employee in this class exercises general supervision over these crews and receives general supervision from an administrative superior. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Plans, schedules and assigns building cleaning and groundskeeping work by deciding priorities, assigning crews to sites and maintaining attendance and time records.

Determines work priorities and coordinates with other agency departments through participation with the property management team and other liaison activities.

Supervises general unskilled grounds maintenance work such as grass cutting, raking, litter pick-up, tree and shrub pruning, parking lot sweeping and related activities.

Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of sprinkling, mowing, snow removal, and related machinery and equipment.

Inspects equipment, diagnoses the cause of equipment failure and malfunction and decides to repair, replace or rebuild parts.

Assigns, inspects and performs quality control on the work of skilled and unskilled auto mechanics and small motor mechanics in the general repair and maintenance of light and heavy trucks, vans, buses and small engine equipment such as lawn mowers, snow blowers and small tractors.

Keeps records pertaining to supply and equipment expenditures.

Recommends to supervisor supply and equipment needs.

Recommends applicants for employment and employees for discipline.

Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and tools of the automotive mechanics trade.

Good knowledge of grounds maintenance.

Good knowledge of building cleaning practices.

Good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotion:

Three (3) years of permanent competitive class status as a Grounds Crew Leader.

 

Open Competitive:

Five (5) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in grounds maintenance and vehicle maintenance and repair, three (3) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
