DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for planning, assigning and supervising the maintenance operations in a large school district or a number of public buildings. An employee in this class has responsibility for the overall operation of a maintenance staff engaged in the maintenance of a large number of buildings within a school district or other governmental building complexes. The employee works with considerable independence in planning, scheduling and supervising the maintenance operations. Supervision is exercised over a large number of maintenance personnel. Work is performed under the general supervision of an administrative superior who reviews work through conference and occasional inspection. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Plans, assigns, supervises and inspects work by maintenance personnel to insure proper maintenance for a large number of buildings within a school district or governmental building complex.
Assists in planning and establishing specifications for all supplies and materials utilized in the maintenance operation of a school district or a governmental building complex; initiates requisitioning, distribution and storage of maintenance supplies.
Maintains appropriate records necessary to the efficient and economic operation of this function.
Advises of necessary changes such as physical set up and new maintenance methods and equipment.
Initiates, organizes and maintains appropriate in-service training programs for all maintenance personnel.
Assists in the preparing and administering of the annual budget established for the maintenance operation.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of modern methods, equipment and supplies used in the maintenance of public and school facilities.
Good knowledge of management principles and practices as related to large scale maintenance operations.
Good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
Working knowledge of establishing and maintaining proper methods, procedures and records as related to the hiring and assigning of personnel, ordering and maintaining stock supplies used in the maintenance operations.
Ability to establish and evaluate efficient and economic maintenance procedure.
Ability to supervise personnel in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
Ability to maintain records.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Five (5) years of experience, or its part time equivalent, in maintenance activities (electrical, plumbing, carpentry), two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
