DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for assisting in the planning and directing of the activities for the Bureau of Street Repair which is responsible for the patching of street, repair of street surfaces and their bases, the resetting of curbing, the inspection of excavation and restoration work on City streets performed by utility companies, the repair and installation of guardrails and overseeing the repair of sidewalks and slurry seal application to City streets. Under direction of the Superintendent, an employee in this class relieves the Superintendent of the day to day tasks in the maintenance and repair of city streets. During the winter months may assist in snow removal operations as needed. Work is reviewed through conference, submission of reports and observance of the street repairs and maintenance. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Assists in the planning and directing of employee activities involving the maintenance and repair of street, street surfaces.
Assists in scheduling the work activities of a large number of employees to insure a systematic program of street repair and resurfacing of city streets.
Assists in the scheduling and supervision of the winter operation of the bureau involving snow plowing, salting and sanding.
Coordinates the maintenance and repair activities with other bureaus of the department.
Reviews and submits time cards for bureau employees.
Attends a variety of meetings in absence of the Superintendent of Street Repairs.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of streets.
Good knowledge of snow removal and related practices.
Good knowledge of the properties, process and conditions used in the remilling and use of asphalt.
Good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to plan, schedule and supervise effectively the work of a large number of employees.
Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Promotion:
Two (2) years of non-competitive class status as a Street Maintenance Crew Leader.
Open Competitive:
Four (4) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent in street repair activities, two (2) years of which must have involved supervisory responsibilities.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
At time of appointment, possession of a valid Class 5 New York State Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
