This work involves responsibility for assisting the Water Meter Repair Supervisor in scheduling and supervising
the work activities of the water meter repair and meter reading units of the Onondaga County Water Authority and the City of Syracuse Water Department. The primary responsibility is to schedule and direct the daily activities of the work crews including receiving and investigating customers complaints, shipping and receiving meters and supplies as well
as the testing and repair of complex industrial and residential meters. An employee in this class works under the direct supervision of the Water Meter Repair Supervisor. Assignments are received through conferences and work orders
issued by the Water Meter Repair Supervisor. The work is reviewed by observation of the performance of assigned
crews and the efficiency of unit operations. An employee in this class may be required to perform the duties of lower classifications within the job family as the need arises. Does related work as required.
Schedules the daily activities of Water Meter Repair and Meter Reading personnel to insure the most efficient and
safe use of equipment and employees.
Oversees, supervises and records the work of meter repair and reading personnel in the installation, repair and
reading of industrial and residential water meters.
Answers customer questions and complaints regarding appointments, installations or service and takes the necessary action to insure customer satisfaction.
Contact business office staff members to resolve issues of questionable readings and problem accounts.
Tests and repairs residential and industrial meters including series "W" Turbo meters, through the use of standard tools and specific testing equipment.
Tests and repairs meter remotes, checks meter readings and meter settings and sets meters as necessary.
Assists in maintaining a variety of written and/or computerized records relating to employee work schedules and payroll, unit equipment, supplies and meter accounts.
Takes periodic inventory of meters and supplies in stock and receives and ships meter supplies.
May perform pressure complaint tests involving disconnecting meters, inserting testing device and the taking and recording of readings.
May operate a motor vehicle, such as a service truck, in the performance of work assignments.
Thorough knowledge of the operation, repair, maintenance and testing of water meters and their internal
mechanisms.
Good knowledge of tools and techniques used in meter testing, maintenance and repair.
Working knowledge of the methods and practices of record keeping.
Working knowledge of the methods and practices of supervision.
Skill in the mechanical repair and maintenance of water meters
Ability to supervise subordinates
Ability to schedule and review the work of subordinates.
Ability to read complex water meters, use measuring devices and test equipment.
Ability to deal in an effective, yet courteous manner with customers and the general public.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Promotion:
Two (2) years of permanent non-competitive class status in the title of Water Meter Repair Worker II; or,
Three (3) years of permanent non-competitive class status in the title of Water Meter Repair Worker I.

Open Competitive:
Two (2) years of work experience or its part-time equivalent in the installation, maintenance and repair of
industrial and residential water meters.
When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being
operated.
