The work involves responsibility for assisting the Water Maintenance Supervisor in scheduling and
implementing the construction, maintenance and repair activities of the Onondaga County Water Authority.
The primary responsibility is to schedule and direct the daily activities of work crews. An employee in this
class works under the direct supervision of the Water Maintenance Supervisor. Assignments are received
through conferences by the Water Maintenance Supervisor and work orders. Work is reviewed by
observation of the performance of assigned crews. Direct supervision is exercised over a number of skilled
and semi-skilled workers. Does related work as required.
Schedules the daily activities of water maintenance crews to insure the most efficient and safe use of
equipment and employees.
Oversees and supervises all emergency repairs made by maintenance crews.
Interprets maps, plans and specifications as they relate to the maintenance and repair of a water
distribution system through the use of an automated system.
Insures that vehicles and equipment receive preventive maintenance when scheduled.
Requisitions materials and equipment needed to complete projects.
Assists in maintaining a variety of records relating to main locations, materials, vehicle maintenance
and personnel.
Good knowledge of the principles, practices, materials and equipment used in the construction and
maintenance of a water distribution system.
Good knowledge of the regulations and fundamentals of safety and preventive measures taken to eliminate work related accidents.
Working knowledge of the methods and practices of record keeping.
Working knowledge of the methods and practices of supervision.
Ability to read and interpret plans, blueprints and maps as they relate to a water distribution system
utilizing an automated Geographic Information System.
Ability to effectively plan and assign the work of subordinates.
Ability to supervise subordinates.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
Promotion:
Two (2) years of permanent, non-competitive class status as a Water Maintenance Crew Leader; or,
Three (3) years of permanent, non-competitive class status as a Water Maintenance Worker II; or,
Three (3) years of permanent, non-competitive class status as an Underground Facilities Locator.
Open Competitive:
Five (5) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in the maintenance and construction of
a water distribution system, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
Must possess a Grade D Water System Operator certification issued by the NYS Department of Health at time of appointment.
