DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for supervision of sewer maintenance activities to assure that work is performed in a timely and efficient manner and according to approved procedures. Duties are performed under the general supervision of the Sewer Maintenance Superintendent with considerable latitude permitted in the exercise of independent judgement and initiative. Direct supervision is exercised over several Sewer Maintenance Crew Leaders, each of whom is responsible for crews of Sewer Maintenance Workers and Laborers. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Plans and directs daily assignments of the maintenance crews.

Schedules regular maintenance and repairs.

Schedules equipment, vehicles, building and grounds maintenance and repair

Schedules cleaning of sewers in response to complaints.

Makes periodic inspections of sewer systems and activities of work crews to insure efficient and economic service.

Determines equipment to be used in daily maintenance work.

Maintains accurate and detailed inventory and job cost records.

Prepares inspection and maintenance reports.

Meets with homeowners to resolve problems relative to property damage and other sewer related problems.

Participates in the development of department standards and budget.

Assists in review of proposed sewer plans, reports and specifications.

Recommends equipment and supply purchases.

Reviews daily work reports; develops and maintains inspection and maintenance activity records.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Thorough knowledge of modern practices of sewer cleaning, flushing, maintenance and television inspection techniques.

Thorough knowledge of the equipment, tools, terminology and safety precautions of the trade.

Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.

Ability to understand and follow written and verbal directions.

Ability to read schematic plans, maps, blueprints.

Ability to establish and maintain accurate records.

Ability to prepare written work reports.

Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotion

 

One (1) year of permanent competitive class status in the title of Sewer Maintenance Crew Leader.

 

Open Competitive

 

Four (4) years of sewer maintenance work experience, or its part-time equivalent, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
