DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for the work of a crew of Sewer Maintenance Workers and Laborers engaged in the cleaning and maintenance of the sewer system. Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs supervisory work involving responsibility for ensuring that sewer cleaning and maintenance work is performed in an efficient manner, on schedule and according to approved procedures. Work performed is viewed in process and upon completion by a supervisor. Supervision is exercised over a small number of subordinates on a sewer maintenance crew or over a small number of sewer maintenance crews depending on the department where employed. Does related work as required.
Supervises the activities of a crew or crews in the cleaning and maintenance of sewers, catch basins, wastewater and/or stormwater collection systems.
Supervises the removal of tree roots, dirt and debris, which block free sewer flow.
May supervise activities of television inspection and internal grouting crews.
Answers emergency calls on a 24-hour basis.
Supervises the cleaning of house laterals by mechanical or electrical means.
Keeps records and makes reports.
May aid in classroom and on-the-job training of sewer maintenance personnel.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of sewer maintenance and cleaning operations and of the tools and equipment used in the process.
Good knowledge of the hazards and necessary safety precautions in sewer maintenance work and in working under extreme weather conditions.
Good knowledge of effective supervisory techniques.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
Ability to keep records and make simple narrative reports.
Ability to make simple arithmetic computations.
Ability to read and interpret sewer maps and plans.
Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates.
Promotion:
Two (2) years of permanent non-competitive class status as a Sewer Maintenance Worker 2.
Open Competitive:
Three (3) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in the maintenance and cleaning of storm and/or sanitary sewer systems.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of the vehicle(s) being operated.
