DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This is supervisory work involving responsibility for planning and directing the activities of the Bureau of Street Repairs in the City of Syracuse Department of Public Works. Under direction of a Deputy Commissioner of Public Works, an employee in this class supervises the maintenance and repair of city streets and the operation and maintenance of all equipment. During winter months, an employee in this class assists in snow removal operations as needed. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports and occasional observation with wide leeway allowed for the exercise of independent judgment. Supervision is exercised over a large number of employees. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Plans and directs the activities of employees engaged in the maintenance and repair of streets.
Schedules the work activities of a large number of employees.
Supervises the operation and maintenance of street repair equipment and tools.
Assists in supervising the winter operation of snow plowing, salting and sanding.
Coordinates maintenance and repair activities with other bureaus of the department.
Maintains records and prepares reports on completed activities.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONALCHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used in street maintenance and repair.
Good knowledge of snow removal and related practices.
Good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
Ability to plan, schedule and supervise the work of a large number of employees.
Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Promotion:
Three (3) years of permanent non‑competitive class status in the title of Street Maintenance Crew Leader.
Open Competitive:
Six (6) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in street maintenance and repair inclusive of paving, regrading, oiling, stoning and curb reconstruction, three (3) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
