DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for supervising and planning all aspects of grounds maintenance work. Under general supervision, an employee in this class supervises a number of subordinate employees in the development and maintenance of grounds, horticultural displays and various site changes such as walkways, parking lots, picnic
areas, recreation areas, etc. Work is reviewed through oral and/or written reports to an administrative superior. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Supervises the maintenance of lawns, trees, shrubs, gardens, sidewalks and traffic control signs.
Supervises the transplanting of flowers and bulbs.
Develops new ornamental horticultural displays.
Plans nursery stock development.
Plans site changes such as walks, grounds, curbs, parking lots, picnic areas, recreation areas and other alterations as needed.
Develops and implements an emergency snow removal plan to allow opening of roads, parking lots, access paths and building entrances.
Plans daily work schedules and long range schedules.
Prepares budget requests as to personnel, equipment and supplies.
May move equipment to and from storage.
May dispose of construction debris and obsolete materials.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the principals, practices and techniques of general site/
grounds maintenance.
Good knowledge of the methods used in propagating, planting, cultivating, pruning and general care of plants, flowers, shrubs and lawns.
Good knowledge of the growth characteristics of flowers, plants, bulbs and shrubs.
Good knowledge of the methods, equipment and materials used in snow plowing and maintenance of roadways, paths, entrances and exits to buildings.
Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of subordinates.
Ability to establish and meet work performance for scheduled completion.
Ability to estimate the cost of repairs.
Ability to maintain records on materials and supplies used, site/grounds maintenance budget and equipment usage.
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Promotion:
Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status in the title of Grounds Crew
Leader.
Open Competitive:
A. Graduation from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university with a baccalaureate degree in agriculture, civil engineering, landscape architecture, landscape engineering, horticulture, forestry, environmental science or a closely related field; or,
B. Four (4) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in agriculture, civil engineering, landscaping, horticulture, arboricultural, site development or maintenance or grounds maintenance work, one (1) year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity; or,
C. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
