The work involves responsibility for leading and participating in the maintenance of public grounds. Under general supervision, an employee in this class supervises a small number of subordinate employees in the development and maintenance of grounds, landscape shrubbery and related horticultural planting. The employee performs ground maintenance work in addition to the more skilled tasks. Duties are performed without direct or continuing supervision, although all work is subject to a check in progress and upon completion by superiors. Does related work as required.
Supervises and participates in semi-skilled propagation, cutting, planting and transplanting of flowers, plants and shrubs.
Supervises the application of fertilizers and insecticides to the plants.
Supervises general unskilled grounds maintenance work such as grass cutting, raking, simple pruning and related activities.
Supervises and participates in the operation and maintenance of sprinkling, mowing, snow removal and related machinery and equipment.
Keeps time records for crews; requisitions supplies; reports to superiors regarding major maintenance and reconstruction needs of property.
When Assigned to School Districts
Supervises the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields, asphalt pavement and related areas.
Good knowledge of the methods used in propagation of plants, planting, cultivating, pruning and general care of plants, flowers, shrubs and lawns.
Working knowledge of the growth characteristics and basic care equipment of flowers, plants and shrubs typical of the area.
Working knowledge of plant disease symptoms and typical means of combating the insects, fungi, parasites and other pests typical of the area.
Ability to supervise a crew of groundskeepers.
Three (3) years of work experience, or it’s part-time equivalent, in landscaping, horticulture, turf care management or exterior grounds work, or;
Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associates Degree in landscape architecture, horticulture, forestry, or a closely related field and one (1) year of work experience, or it’s part-time equivalent, in landscaping, horticulture, turf care management or exterior grounds work.
When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid Non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.
