HIGHWAY MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR 63070
The work involves responsibility for directing the road maintenance and construction activities of the county highway system and providing technical direction and field supervision to all road maintenance and construction activities including snow and ice control on public highways. A major responsibility is for the coordination of maintenance and construction activities in widely separated geographic areas and for liaison between engineering and office personnel and the field crews. Supervision is exercised over a large number of employees through subordinate foremen, and work is reviewed through observation or through oral and written reports from these foremen. Professional and administrative direction is received from an administrative superior on policy matters. Does related work as required.
Directs the maintenance and construction of county highways and the grounds of county buildings.
Directs the activities of specialized crews engaged in building drainage facilities and performing other road construction and maintenance work.
Directs snow removal, sanding of roads and schedules the use of centrally located heavy equipment for maintenance, construction and snow removal use.
Coordinates schedules for repairs of equipment.
Costs out jobs including estimation of equipment, manpower and material.
Assists and participates in the selection, evaluation and interview of eligible candidates for particular positions.
Supervises the maintenance of personnel records; acts as a liaison between engineering and administrative personnel and the field crews.

Comprehensive knowledge of methods, operating rules and equipment of road and ground maintenance.
Comprehensive knowledge of types and uses of public works equipment related to highway maintenance and construction operations.
Thorough knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of all typical public works equipment.
Thorough knowledge of the maintenance and repair characteristics of the road network within the county.
Thorough knowledge of effective supervisory techniques.
Thorough knowledge of construction specifications and of their application to public works construction.
Working knowledge of civil engineering as it relates to public works construction and maintenance.
Ability to coordinate the large-scale use of men, equipment and materials in geographically separated areas.
Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of others.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, sketches, construction plans, specifications and technical instructions.

Two (2) years of permanent competitive class status as a Highway Section Crew Leader or Bridge Construction Supervisor.
Seven (7) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in highway maintenance or construction work including snow and ice control on public highways, four (4) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.
