DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for supervising the maintenance, construction and reconstruction of county bridges. Under limited supervision, the Bridge Construction Supervisor supervises and oversees a small number of crews in a variety of specialized manual tasks related to the maintenance, construction, reconstruction and modification of bridges. On major assignments no work will be performed other than supervising subordinates. This employee is responsible for seeing that schedules are met, that adequate supplies and equipment are on hand for the work, and that time records are kept. Assignments are received from a technical superior who reviews work through inspections or through oral and written reports. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Supervises in the construction, reconstruction and modification of all types of bridges, drainage structures, buildings and special construction projects during summer construction season.

During the winter months, operates truck with attached snowplow used in clearing bridges and approaches.

Supervises in the laying of concrete blocks and pouring of new concrete floors.

Supervises in the erection of buildings, both concrete block and metal. Supervises in bridge repair and widening to conform with road requirements.

Transports heavy equipment such as cranes and dozers between work locations using a truck trailer; operates truck pulling a trailer to transport equipment and materials to bridge site.

Requisitions supplies and equipment, maintains daily time records, prepares and submits reports on work accomplished.

Supervises building maintenance and construction division in winter.

Supervises snow and ice removal operations.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Thorough knowledge of the materials, equipment, and repair methods commonly employed in repairing, modifying, constructing or reconstructing concrete and steel bridges and buildings.

Thorough knowledge of the hazards and necessary precautions in rigging and in working under extreme weather conditions.

Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the building of heavy concrete and structural steel bridges and storage buildings.

Good knowledge of effective supervisory techniques.

Skills in the manipulation of ropes and equipment used in rigging.

Skills in the use of common hand tools.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints.

Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability and willingness to do heavy manual work.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to maintain records and to prepare reports.

Ability to supervise the operation of all types of heavy equipment.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Promotion:

 

Two (2) years of permanent competitive status as a Bridge Maintenance Crew Leader.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Open Competitive:

 

Six (6) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the construction, reconstruction, maintenance and repair of bridges, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

 

Possession of a Class A Commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle being operated. Eligibility for and continued possession of the license is required for employment.
