The work involves responsibility for supervision as well as participation in the maintenance, construction and reconstruction of county or city bridges. This employee is considered a working crew leader who leads and exercises direct supervision over a small crew in a variety of specialized manual tasks related to the maintenance, construction, reconstruction and modification of bridges. The Bridge Maintenance Crew Leader is responsible for seeing that schedules are met, adequate supplies and equipment are on hand to do the job, and accurate time records are kept. General supervision and assignments are received from a technical superior who reviews work through inspections or through oral and written reports. Does related work as required.
Supervises and participates in the construction, reconstruction and modification of all types of bridges, drainage structures, buildings and special construction projects during summer construction season.
Supervises and participates in the laying of concrete blocks and pouring of new concrete floors.
Supervises and participates in the erection of buildings including wood, concrete block and metal.
Supervises and participates in the bridge repair and widening to conform with road requirements.
Transports heavy equipment such as cranes and dozers between work locations using a truck trailer; operates truck pulling a trailer to transport equipment and materials to bridge site.
Requisitions supplies and equipment, maintains daily time records, prepares and submits reports on work accomplished.
During the winter months, operates snow removal equipment.
During the winter months, may supervise snow removal activities.
During off-season may do general repair or maintenance on buildings.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the materials, equipment, and repair methods commonly employed in repairing, modifying, constructing or reconstructing concrete and steel bridges and buildings.
Thorough knowledge of the hazards and necessary precautions in heavy equipment rigging and in working under extreme weather conditions.
Thorough knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and practices used in the building of heavy concrete and structural steel bridges and storage buildings.
Thorough knowledge of proper construction safety techniques.
Working knowledge of effective supervisory techniques.
Skill in the manipulation of ropes and equipment used in rigging.
Skill in the use of common hand tools.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints.
Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of subordinate staff in their work activities.
Ability and willingness to do heavy manual work.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to maintain records and to prepare reports.
Ability to supervise the operation of all types of heavy equipment.
Four (4) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in bridge or highway construction, reconstruction, maintenance and repair.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
Possession of a Class A Commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle being operated. Eligibility for and continued possession of the license is required for employment.
