DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for performing skilled work in the operation of sophisticated heavy construction equipment. Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs skilled mechanical work involving the operation of such equipment as hydraulic boom track hoes, pavers or landfill compactors. Operation of this type of equipment entails unusual responsibility for the safety of others. Employees are responsible for the routine maintenance of equipment and may be required to perform related manual labor. Supervision may be exercised over helpers. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Operates a hydraulic boom track hoe, large dozer (D-7, D-8) or other heavy construction equipment on general excavation and fill work for highways and bridge projects.

Operates paver, earthmovers and shoulder pavers.

Operates large wheel loader and landfill compactor.

Operates equipment when used as an excavator or loader.

Checks working condition of equipment; performs routine service and maintenance.

May operate other types of motor equipment with snow plows and other types of heavy construction equipment.

May load and unload heavy equipment and place steel beams, forms and concrete

for bridges.

May set flags and participate generally in the laboring work of crews.

May lead crews on an occasional basis.

May perform job duties associated with the Motor Equipment Operator 1 and 2 classification.

May instruct and train personnel in the use and handling of specified pieces of motor equipment as directed by supervisor.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Thorough knowledge of the operation and maintenance of hydraulic boom track hoes, shovels, paver, earthmovers, road widener, landfill compactor or other equipment as needed.

Good knowledge of the component parts, operating principles and maintenance needs of heavy equipment.

Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions in the operation of heavy equipment.

Skill in the operation of sophisticated heavy construction and transportation equipment.

Ability to perform routine equipment service and maintenance.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Physical strength and agility sufficient to operate heavy equipment over rough terrain occasionally under adverse weather conditions.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the operation of heavy construction equipment such as dozers, graders, loaders, rollers, excavators, gradalls or similar heavy construction equipment.

 

When assigned to Onondaga County Department of Transportation:

Two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the operation of heavy construction equipment such as dozers, graders, loaders, rollers, excavators, gradalls or similar heavy construction equipment; or two (2) years of non-competitive class status in the title of Motor Equipment Operator II.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

Possession of a Class A or Class B Commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle being operated. Eligibility for and continued possession of the license is required for employment.

 

Possession of Excavator Certification is required to perform excavation duties in accordance with New York State General Business Law. Certification must be obtained during the probationary period. Training will commence upon appointment. Eligibility for and continued possession of the license is required for employment.
