DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

This is specialized work in the control and eradication of insects and vermin in public housing units and buildings. Under general supervision, an incumbent in this class prepares and applies a variety of poisons and chemical insecticides which requests a thorough familiarity with the uses, limitations and results of such chemicals. The job emphasizes the preventive uses of poisons and insecticides to control insects and vermin. Work assignments are received both orally and in writing with wide leeway allowed for the exercise of independent action. Supervision is not typically performed in this classification. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Researches present marketed insecticides, poisons and their compounds with respect to their uses and results; determines best chemicals for a particular exterminating job.

Mixes chemical compounds to make poisons and insecticides which will achieve the best results.

Undertakes programs of preventative extermination to eliminate rats, rodents and insects from possible breeding places.

Sprays, fogs, dusts, fumigates and places poisons in apartments and basements of public housing units and buildings.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Thorough knowledge of chemical insecticides and poisons and the extent to which they may be used without harming humans and domestic animals.

Good knowledge of the habits and breeding grounds of insects of vermin, and how best to eliminate them.

Good knowledge of equipment used in mixing and spreading poisons.

Some knowledge of hand tools and their uses.

Ability to instruct tenants in ways of preventing return of insects and vermin.

Ability to make reports; follow written and oral instructions.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

One (1) year of work experience, or its part time equivalent, as an Exterminator.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

 

Possession of appropriate local and/or state certification to apply commercial pesticides.

Possession of a valid Class V driver's license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles at time of appointment.
