DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
This is skilled work involving the performance of steamfitting and related repair and maintenance tasks, and the supervision of others engaged in similar work. A Steamfitter Crew Leader lays out and oversees the work of journey level carpenters, performs skilled journey level work in the installation, maintenance and repair of high and low pressure steam lines, pipes, boilers and refrigeration equipment. Assignments are outlined in general terms requiring the exercise of independent judgment in planning the details of jobs. Assignments are checked by review of reports and by inspection of work. Immediate supervision is exercised over the work of steamfitters and helpers to whom specific assignments are made and whose work is checked in process and upon completion. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Receives requisitions for steamfitting work.
Prepares working plans and assigns subordinates to work.
Removes worn or damaged high-pressure steam lines and replaces with new line.
Welds steam pipes and hanger supports on steam lines.
Grinds and reseats steam valves; cleans and repairs air control and flow valves on air conditioning equipment.
Repairs and maintains pumps pertaining to steam and refrigeration systems.
Makes estimation of time and materials.
Inspects and supervises the work of subordinates engaged in similar tasks.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, materials and tools of the steamfitting trade.
Thorough knowledge of flows pressures and capacities of steam lines and boilers.
Thorough knowledge of methods and materials needed in maintaining a large refrigeration system.
Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions used in the steamfitting trade.
Skill in the use and care of tools, materials, and equipment of the trade.
Ability to understand and work from general instructions, blueprints and sketches.
Ability to make time and material estimates.
Ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Five (5) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, as a steamfitter of which three (3) years shall have been at the journey level.
