DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for assisting Emergency Valve Operators in opening and closing valves of different size, type and use in a municipal water system. An employee in this class performs repetitive manual labor by locating water valves, exposing and removing valve box covers, accessing valves and operating the valves as needed. The position requires emergency response to system breaks and leaks to make corrections to keep overall damage to a minimum. The work is performed under the direction of Emergency Valve Operators. Department managers provide additional training and supervision as required. Does related work as required.
Assists in locating valves in the water system.
Assists in excavating, opening and cleaning valve boxes, vaults and bilco doors.
Assists in investigating water complaints and/or frozen services.
Assists in locating water leaks and breaks.
Assists in making sure all air relief equipment is open and operating.
Assists in marking locations of water lines as directed by the Emergency Valve Operator.
Assists in operating valves to shut off and turn on water.
Assists in raising valve boxes to required grade.
Maintains shift logs and other reports as required.
Opens and runs hydrants to clear mains and/or flush system as directed.
Removes broken meters and installs temporary hook-ups as directed.
Reports problems, damage or loss of equipment to superiors.
Drives emergency truck when assigned.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Working knowledge of the geography of the local road network that cover the department’s conduits and water lines.
Working knowledge of the location and function of the water supply valve system.
Working knowledge of the order in which valves need to be operated in an emergency.
Working knowledge of the practices, tools and terminology used in water distribution system repair and maintenance.
Working knowledge of the safety precautions and proper use of the department’s equipment assigned to the valve operation.
Ability to act in a courteous and effective manner with the public.
Ability to communicate clearly.
Ability to do heavy labor work.
Ability to read and use the departments various maps and files to locate valves.
Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
Ability to work calmly in emergency situations.
Special Necessary Requirement
Possession of a valid New York State Non-CDL or CDL, including any special endorsements required for the type of vehicle being operated.
