DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

              Under general supervision of the Water Plant Manager, an employee in this class is responsible for the technical aspect of maintenance, repair

and installation of electrical systems, equipment and fixtures in Water Plant Stations and substations. Work includes the recommendation of routine maintenance

and repair procedures as well as planning and layout assignments. The Water Plant Electrician is allowed considerable latitude in determining methods

of work procedures and may be assisted by other employees assigned by the Water Plant Manager.  The nature of the work will require employees in this class to operate motor vehicles and

power-driven equipment.  Does related work as required.

 

TYPICIAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

              Installs repairs and maintains systems and equipment such as: power distribution and auxiliary power distribution equipment, wiring, switches, motors, controls, heating, ventilating and air conditioning equipment, and fixtures and lighting equipment in keeping with applicable standards and codes.

              Plans and lays out work consistent with applicable standards and codes.

              May direct the work of a small number of skilled, semi-skilled, and relatively unskilled workers in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment.

              Recommends routine maintenance and repair procedure and keeps accurate records of all completed maintenance and repair work.

              Fulfills reporting requirements relating to work performed and material used.

              In consultation with the Water Plant Manager, contributes to the planning and layout for new equipment related to the expansion or replacement of facilities.

              Recommends changes designed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of operations.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

              Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools, equipment, and applicable codes used in installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems and equipment.

              Thorough knowledge of the practices, techniques, principles, and electrical theory associated with the electrical trade.

              Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the electrical trade and associated high voltage work.

              Ability to install, alter, repair, maintain and troubleshoot a variety of electrical equipment and complex electrical systems.

              Skill in the use of a variety of hand and powered tools and motorized equipment.

              Ability to supervise others in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

              Ability to plan and lay out electrical work.

              Ability to read and interpret plans, diagrams, and specifications.

              Ability to use a variety of tools and test equipment used in electrical work.

              Ability to use a personal computer and associated office and electrical software.

              Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

              Ability to perform moderate to heavy labor.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

  1. Possession of a Bachelor's degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees in electronic or electrical engineering technology or a closely related field and two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in installation, maintenance and repair of low voltage (up to 480 volts) electrical systems and equipment, which must have included laying out of work and diagnosis of malfunctions; or,
  2. Possession of an Associate's degree or higher from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees in electronic or electrical engineering technology or a closely related field and four (4) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in installation, maintenance and repair of low voltage (up to 480 volts) electrical systems and equipment, which must have included laying out of work and diagnosis of malfunctions; or,
  3. Four (4) years of technical or apprentice-level training in electronic or electrical engineering technology or a closely related field and two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in installation, maintenance and repair of low voltage (up to 480 volts) electrical systems and equipment, which must have included laying out of work and diagnosis of malfunctions; or,
  4. Six (6) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in installation, maintenance, and repair of low voltage (up to 480 volts) electrical systems and equipment, which must have included laying out of work and diagnosis of malfunctions.
