DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for the operation of the type B wastewater treatment plant in the village of Minoa, which has a plant capacity of less than 2.5 million gallons per day. The operator is responsible for the efficient operation and maintenance of the plant, which has facilities for chemical precipitation or sludge vacuum filtration or sludge incineration or sludge oxidation or separate sludge digestion or a biological oxidation process. The work is performed under the general supervision of an administrative superior in the Village. General supervision may be exercised over subordinate employees in the performance and assignment of duties. Does related work as required.
Starts and stops pumps, motors, air compressors and all other related machinery and equipment in the wastewater treatment plant.
Makes minor repairs to machinery and equipment as needed.
Records readings from meters and gauges.
Treats and disposes of sludge.
Adds chemicals to wastewater.
Takes samples of wastewater for testing.
Makes necessary tests for the control of plant operation.
Supervises the work of laborers and other subordinate employees and assists
in their training.
Keeps a log of plant operations and related records.
Performs custodial duties in connection with the maintenance of the plant.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the practices and the equipment required in the operation of a type B wastewater treatment plant with facilities for chemical precipitation or sludge vacuum filtration or sludge incineration or sludge oxidation or separate sludge digestion or biological oxidation process.
Working knowledge of the principles and applications of physics, chemistry,
and bacteriology as applied to wastewater treatment and disposal.
Skill in the operation and repair of pumps, valves, and related mechanical equipment in a type B wastewater treatment plant.
Ability to read, understand and record data from gauges, scales and meters.
Ability to make routine laboratory and field tests for control of operations.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Mechanical aptitude.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
(1). Graduation from high school or possession of a New York State high school equivalency diploma; and,
(2). Satisfactory completion of an appropriate course of instruction approved by the State Department of Environmental Conservation.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
Possession of a Grade 2 certificate issued under the provisions of part 650 of the New York State Environmental Conservation Regulations at time of appointment.
