DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for assisting semi-skilled and skilled instrumentation and/or electrical maintenance staff by performing a wide variety of relatively unskilled tasks while learning the more skilled aspects of the work. Employees in this class perform the heavier, less difficult, and more repetitive activities and tasks involving the use of elementary skills in the instrumentation field and electrical trade as applied to wastewater conveyances and treatment and related process equipment maintenance. The work is carried out under specific directions and supervision of a higher level employee and involves the use of tools and equipment used in instrumentation and electrical maintenance and repair. Employees in this class may operate motor vehicles and power-driven equipment. An employee in this class does not exercise supervision. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Assists more skilled employees in the installation, maintenance and repair of industrial instrumentation and electrical equipment found in wastewater plants and/or conveyance facilities (e.g., pump stations) and systems by using a variety of tools and equipment in the performance of relatively unskilled tasks.

Performs, under specific instructions and direct supervision of a higher level employee, the heavier, less difficult, and more repetitive activities and tasks associated with maintenance and repair of industrial instrumentation and electrical equipment and fixtures found in wastewater treatment plants and systems.

Learns to maintain and repair industrial instrumentation and electrical equipment such as meters, sensors, transducers, and electrical motors, fixtures and circuits respectively.

Learns to operate tools and equipment used in maintenance and repair of instrumentation and/or electrical work, such as test equipment, meters, and hand tools.

Learns reporting requirements relating to work performed and materials used.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to use a variety of hand and power tools and instrumentation/electrical test equipment.

Ability to perform moderate to heavy manual labor.

Ability to interact and cooperate within a team environment that supports communication, development and growth.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

As Assigned: Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

A. One (1) year of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in maintenance and repair work which relates to electrical construction and maintenance, or maintenance and repair of electronic equipment; or,

 

B. Satisfactory completion of training of at least one (1) year's cumulative duration which relates to electrical construction or maintenance and repair of electronic equipment; or,

 

C. Graduation from a vocational training program in Electrical Maintenance Technology; or,

 

D. Satisfactory completion of sixty (60) semester credit hours from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees in a Mechanical Technology program.

 

E. An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) and (C).

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.
