DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
An employee in this class performs skilled work in the fabrication and repair of metal parts and tools by operating a variety of machines and tools. Instructions are received orally or in writing regarding work to be performed, allowing considerable latitude in planning and implementing each work assignment. Work assignments are received form a supervisor and checked through the satisfactory performance of part made or repaired. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Fabricates and repairs, through the use of a variety of machine shop equipment, various types of shafts, special pins, studs, comes, I-bolts and special tools needed for particular types of jobs.
Operates engine lathes, computer pneumatic control (CNC) lathes, CNC milling machines, drill press, honing machines, valve grinders, power hammers, power saws, hose expanders and grinding wheel.
Maintains and repairs machines used in the work.
Makes parts, tools, dies and fixtures by cutting and shaping iron, steel, brass, copper, or any alloys of metals with machine shop equipment, using as a basis blueprints, drawings, rough sketches, or broken parts.
May order steel bars, angle iron, key stock, caps, reamers, dies and other types of tools needed to complete a job.

Good knowledge of the practices, materials, methods and tools of the machinist trade.
Good knowledge of the properties of metals used in the trade.
Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to program computer pneumatic control (CNC) machines.
Ability to read and interpret measuring devices, such as, micrometers, calipers and veneers.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to read blueprints, sketches and diagrams.
Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment common to the trade.
Skill in the use of micrometers and other testing instruments.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Three (3) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, as a machinist.
Special Necessary Requirement
When required to operate a motor vehicle, possession of a valid New York State non CDL or CDL,
including any special endorsements, as required for the type of vehicle being operated.
