PLUMBER CREW LEADER (Non‑Competitive)

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

 

Supervises and performs skilled work at the journey level in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures and accessories; performs related work as required.

 

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

Under general supervision, an employee in this class supervises the work of journey level plumbers and performs skilled journey level work in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing fixtures and accessories, requiring the applica­tion of standard trade practices. Supervision is exercised over a small number of plumbers and semi‑skilled subordinates. Considerable latitude is given the employee in planning and laying out jobs, assigning work crews and supervising their work. Work is assigned by oral or written directives and reviewed upon completion by an administrative or professional superior.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

 

Supervises and participates in the installation and maintenance of plumbing systems, fixtures and accessories.

Submits to superior cost analysis and materials necessary to perform a job.

Cuts openings in walls and pipes; bends pipes over blocks by hand; cuts, reams and threads pipe.

Installs, maintains and repairs valves, faucets, traps, sinks, washbowls, sewers, vents and other sanitary fixtures.

Pours molten solder over joints and spreads and tapers solder with a cloth.

Maintains piping systems and opens clogged drains with a plunger or other device; replaces washers or leaky faucets; tests for leaks by filling pressure.

Repairs, replaces, and checks high and low pressure steam boilers; blows down and flushes boiler; checks all safety devices and controls, replacing hot water heaters; and similar apparatus.

Makes estimation of times and materials.

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

 

Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, tools of the plumbing trade.

Thorough knowledge of flows, pressures, and capacities of water tank and lines.

Thorough knowledge of applicable rules, regulations and codes governing plumbing installations in a governmental jurisdiction.

Thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of the work.

Skill in the use and care of tools, materials, and equipment of the trade.

Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability to understand and work from general instructions, building specifications, blueprints, and sketches.

Ability to make time and material estimates.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Graduation from a standard senior high school and eight years experience in the plumbing trade; or,

A satisfactory equivalent combination of the above education and experience.
