WELDER 6115

(Non-Competitive)

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES

Performs skilled work in uniting metallic parts by heating and allowing metals to flow together; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

Under the general supervision of supervisory level maintenance personnel, an employee in this class performs skilled work in fabricating a variety of metals and alloys in the construction and repair of structures and equipment by using electric arc, gas welding or brazing equipment. An employee in this class possesses the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform any or all-skilled tasks of the trade, which distinguishes classifications that perform welding tasks of lesser difficulty, which requires fewer skills.

An employee in this class receives assignments orally from the supervisor who may supplement oral instructions with sketches, diagrams, or blueprints. The supervisor reviews assignments by discussing same or through personal inspection. An employee An this, class occasionally may exercise direct supervision over a small number of workers who perform unskilled tasks such as holding pieces of metal in place or carrying equipment.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK

When assigned to arc welding:

Turn knobs on welding unit to the desired amperage.

Selects electrodes based upon head, type, and thickness of metal; inserts electrode into portable holder; connects cables from welding unit to workpiece to obtain desired polarity; and starts power supply to produce electric current.

Manipulates unit to form arc, which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from electrode to workpiece and which fuses edges of workpiece.

Guides manually electrode along weld line, while maintaining length of arc and speed of movement of electrode by positioning the holder the appropriate distance from the workpiece and moving the holder along the weld line by hand, to form specified depth of fusion and bead, which is judged from the color of metal and size of molten puddle.

Inspects mold for size of bead and penetration into the mold line.

May use carbon electrode and apply manually filler rods to supply metal for fusing.

Cleans workpiece by using wire brushes, portable grinders or chemical baths.

Repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes and increases size of metal pores by applying, welding process.

Uses chisels to remove splatters or excess molds.

May position and clamp workpieces together or assemble them in jigs of fixtures.

May use flame cutting machines or band torches to flame cut metal plates or structured shapes.

When assigned to gas welding:

Performs tasks that unite metals by using equipment which introduces shield

of inert or noncombustible gas, such as helium, argon, carbon dioxide, or nitrogen, around electric arc between electrode and workpiece to prevent oxidation.

Selects and installs gas orifice and threads consumable wire electrode through welding gun; connects hose from gas tank to gun; turns knobs to select appropriate gas pressure, electric current, and speed of electrode wirefeed; connects cables from welding unit to workpiece and electrode holder.

Manipulates unit to form arc, which generates heat to melt and deposit metal from workpiece, and which fuses edges of workpiece.

Guides manually electrode along mold line, while maintaining lengths of arc and speed of movement of electrode by positioning the holder the appropriate distance from the workpiece and moving the holder along the mold line by hand, to form specified depth of fusion and bead, which is judged from the color of metal and size of molten puddle.

When assigned to brazing:

Performs tasks that bead together components to assemble metal parts by using a hand torch.

Aligns and clamp, together workpieces by using rulers, squares, Or templates or by placing workpieces in fixtures, Jigs, or wires; cleans joints of workpieces by using wire brushes or by dipping Workpieces into cleaning solution.

Selects appropriate torch tip, flux & brazing alloy; connects hoses from torch to tanks of oxygen and specified fuel, such as acetylene or natural gas; turns handles to start flow of fuel, lights flame with spark tool, and adjusts knobs that regulate pressure and fuel mixture to obtain desired color and size of flame.

Brushes flux onto joint of workpiece or dips braze rod into flux to present oxidation of metal; manipulates torch and rod along joint or seam of workpiece to heat to brazing temperature and melt braze alloy to band metal pieces together.

Inspects seams and joints for defects in band and rebrazes same.

May braze together broken parts and corner holes to repair leaks.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment used in welding work.

Thorough knowledge of the properties of typical metals used in welding, such as steel iron, brass, and aluminum inclusive of various alloys used.

Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety preventions of the welding trade.

Skill in, fabricating metals and alloys in the construction and repair of structures and equipment.

Skill in the use of tools and materials used in the welding trade.

Ability to read and understand sketches, diagrams, and blueprints.

Ability to follow oral instructions pertaining to welding work.

MINIMUIM QUALIFICATIONS

Three (3) years of fall time experience under a journey level welder, which provided training equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship Program. Apprenticeship training in the welding trade, or training gained by completion of technical courses in the welding trade at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted for the above training and experience on a year-for-year basis.
