DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves the semi-skilled use of acetylene or electric arc welding equipment to cut and fuse metal parts and materials to a variety of equipment, vehicles and items that require disassembly and/or repair. The employee applies trade skills to a variety of welding, cutting and brazing job on ferrous and nonferrous metals. The employee exercises some independent judgement in the methods and equipment used in obtaining the results. Work assignments are received both orally and in writing from a superior. Work is checked while in progress and upon completion. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Preheats and cleans metals; lays out, cuts and fits materials for welding; sets up and maintains equipment used on the job.

Select proper welding heat, the proper welding reds and size of electrodes used for correct penetration and strength of welded materials.

Does cutting, welding and grinding on hard surfaces such as broken and worn snow plow blades, truck bodies, graders, rock crushers, cranes and other stock; does flat, vertical and horizontal welding.

Uses electric saws and grinders to cut and shape steel for proper fits, grinds and polishes work pieces.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of the practices, materials, methods and tools of the welding trade. Good knowledge of the properties of ferrous and nonferrous metals encountered in the welding trade. Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work. Skill in the use and care of the use and care of the tools and equipment common to the welding trade. Ability to reconstruct broken parts. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to read simple sketches and diagrams. Physical condition commensurate with the ability to perform the work.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

One (1) year of welding experience.
