HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC CREW LEADER 61110
Under the general supervision of an administrative superior, an employee in this class diagnoses, assigns and supervises the repair and maintenance of automotive and construction equipment and other types of mechanical equipment repair work performed in a department garage. Work assignments are received in the form of oral and written instructions or by complaints regarding the operations of specific vehicles or equipment. The crew leader exercises independent judgment in diagnosing the problems and assigns the repair work to the Heavy Equipment Mechanics and helpers through oral instructions and/or written work sheets. Work is checked through occasional inspections while repairs are in progress and by final inspections on completed work. The employee may assist in performing repairs that are unusually difficult and require a very extensive knowledge of the trade. Direct supervision is exercised over Heavy Equipment Mechanics, helpers and other subordinate employees assigned to the garage area.
Inspects equipment, diagnoses the cause of equipment failure and decides to repair, replace or rebuild parts.
Assigns, inspects and makes a final check of the work of skilled and unskilled mechanics in the general repair and maintenance of heavy construction equipment.
Instructs and may assist the mechanics in the repair of unusually difficult work assignments requiring extensive knowledge and skill.
Maintains the garage to maintain safe working conditions.
Maintains complete record of all requested work and completed work, employees and keeps vacation records, sick and personal leave.
Notifies departments when work is completed.
Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and tools of the Heavy Equipment Mechanics trade.
Thorough knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel equipment and a variety of highway or construction equipment.
Skill in the use and care of tools and repair machinery.
Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts in specific repair problems.
Ability to supervise and instruct mechanics in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
Ability to keep simple records, written or computerized as required.
Two (2) years of permanent non-competitive class status as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic II.
A) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology with a specialty in Heavy Equipment or an Associate’s Degree in Diesel Equipment Technology and three (3) years of skilled mechanical experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the repair and maintenance of heavy automotive equipment or construction equipment utilizing both gasoline and diesel powered engines, one (1) year of which must have involved the maintenance and repair of bulldozers, power shovels, extractors and like construction equipment; or,
B) Five (5) years of skilled mechanical experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the repair and maintenance of heavy automotive equipment or construction equipment utilizing both gasoline and diesel powered engines, one (1) year of which experience must have involved the maintenance and repair of bulldozers, power shovels, extractors and like construction equipment; or,
C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.
When assigned to Onondaga County Department of Transportation must be in possession of a minimum Class A, O restriction, Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Wrecker endorsement as required by the New York Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle being operated. In addition, must possess the New York State Inspection Certification for Light and Heavy Duty Vehicles.
