HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC CREW LEADER (FIRE) 61095

Under the general supervision of an administrative superior, an employee in this class leads and participates in the work of a group of mechanics engaged in the routine repair and maintenance of automotive, construction, fire apparatus, and other types of mechanical equipment repair work performed in a department garage. This is manual labor involving responsibility for acting as a lead worker with a small group of Heavy Equipment Mechanics I and II. Work assignments are received in the form of oral and written instructions or by complaints regarding the operations of specific vehicles or equipment. The crew leader exercises independent judgment in diagnosing problems and planning and laying out the repair work for mechanics through oral instructions and/or written work sheets. Work is checked through occasional inspections while repairs are in progress and by final inspections on completed work. The position does not exercise regular continuing supervision, but exercises supervisory responsibilities only as the particular occasion demands. Does related work as required.
Leads and performs skilled work and repairs of heavy automotive equipment, gasoline and diesel powered engines and firefighting equipment and apparatus.
Inspects equipment, diagnoses the cause of equipment failure and decides to repair, replace or rebuild parts.
Performs, assigns, inspects and makes a final check of the work of skilled and unskilled mechanics in the general repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.
Leads, performs and instructs mechanics in the repair of unusually difficult work assignments requiring extensive knowledge and skill.
Maintains the garage to maintain safe working conditions.
Notifies departments when work is completed.
Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and tools of Firefighting Equipment and Apparatus.
Thorough knowledge of the principles, methods, materials and tools of the Heavy Equipment Mechanics trade.
Thorough knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel equipment and a variety of heavy equipment.
Skill in the use and care of tools and repair machinery.
Ability to adapt available tools and repair parts in specific repair problems.
Ability to supervise and instruct mechanics engaged in repair work.
Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.
Ability to keep simple records, written or computerized as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Promotion:
Two (2) years of permanent non-competitive class status as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic II; or
Three (3) years of permanent non-competitive class status as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic I.
Open Competitive:
A) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with an Associate’s Degree in Automotive Technology with a specialty in Heavy Equipment or an Associate’s Degree in Diesel Equipment Technology and three (3) years of skilled mechanical experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the repair and maintenance of heavy automotive equipment or construction equipment utilizing both gasoline and diesel powered engines, one (1) year of which must have involved the maintenance and repair of fire equipment including fire engines and aerial apparatus; or,
B) Five (5) years of skilled mechanical experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the repair and maintenance of heavy automotive equipment or construction equipment utilizing both gasoline and diesel powered engines, one (1) year of which experience must have involved the maintenance and repair of fire equipment including fire engines and aerial apparatus; or,
C) Four (4) years of skilled mechanical experience, or its part-time equivalent, in the repair and maintenance of heavy automotive equipment or construction equipment utilizing both gasoline and diesel powered engines, and possession of current Emergency Vehicle Technician Certification for Master Level III Fire Apparatus; or,
D) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B) and (C).
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT
When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.
