DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for performing skilled work in removing dents or replacing damaged parts on automotive equipment bodies. An employee in this class will paint vehicles using appropriate equipment as needed. Under general supervision, instructions are given regarding jobs to be performed, allowing considerable latitude for planning and implementation of work assignments. Work is checked during progress and upon completion by a superior. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Removes dents in automobiles, bus, truck and construction equipment bodies, fenders and cabs.
Fills badly dented or rusted out areas with body fill material; sands, files and smoothes to a finished work.
Removes badly damaged parts and replaces with new parts.
Paints motor vehicles using the appropriate standard tools and equipment.
Welds breaks in body metal.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the practices, tools, materials, and terminology used in body repair work.
Good knowledge of the operations of gas and electric arc welding equipment.
Good knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
Skill in the use of tools associated with automotive body repair work.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
Ability to layout and follow through work assignments.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
One (1) year of work experience or its part time equivalent, in the repair of automotive bodies.
Special Necessary Requirement
When required to operate a motor vehicle, possession of a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.
