DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for performing routine servicing and maintenance of automotive equipment and repairs of small engines. Under the immediate supervision of an Automotive Mechanic or Automotive Mechanic Crew Leader, an employee in this class performs various unskilled or semi-skilled maintenance and repair of automotive equipment and small engine equipment. This classification differs from that of Automotive Mechanic in that the assigned tasks require a less extensive knowledge of mechanical systems and repair techniques. The employee may assist a more skilled or experienced mechanic in performing more difficult repair work. On routine tasks the employee works with considerable independence but is supervised directly by an Automotive Mechanic or Automotive Mechanic Crew Leader on new or difficult tasks. Does related work as required.

 

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Services automobiles, trucks and other mobile equipment with the proper lubricants; checks and replenishes gasoline, oil and water as needed.

Inspects and services batteries; changes oil filters; cleans air filters.

Drains and refills crank cases; checks and lubricates transmissions, differentials and rear-axle housings.

Repairs flat tires; mounts tires on wheel rims and inflates tires to recommended pressure.

Washes and polishes automobile and truck bodies.

May inspect vehicle for mechanical defects or assist and Automotive Mechanic in performing more skilled repairs and mechanical maintenance.

May perform brake inspections and replace defective parts as needed, with final inspection performed by an Automotive Mechanic.

May operate automotive equipment.

May, when assigned to a large scale operation, perform all maintenance and repairs such as replace or clean spark plugs, manually adjust or install points, install new condensers and coils, etc. on the following types of equipment: lawn mowers, chain saws, boat engines, motorcycles, gas-driven bug sprayer, cement mixers, water pumps, etc.

Maintains a written record of work performed by recording the equipment number, the work that is done the parts that are used and the part numbers.

May operate four-wheel drive and similar vehicles to plow snow when required.

 

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

Working knowledge of tools and equipment used in motor vehicle maintenance work.

Working knowledge of automotive lubricating methods.

Skill in use and care of automotive servicing tools and equipment.

Ability to determine by inspection of automotive equipment need for grease, oil, water and gasoline.

Ability to assist in making minor mechanical repairs on large engine and automotive equipment.

Ability to perform all maintenance and repair on small engine equipment.

Ability to carry out simple oral and written instructions.

Ability to keep simple written records.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

None.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

 

When required to operate a motor vehicle, possession of a valid New York State Non-CDL or CDL, including any special endorsements, as required for the type of vehicle being operated.
