An employee in this class performs semi-skilled work in the design, fabrication and painting of municipal
and other miscellaneous signs. The work is routine in the type and variety of transportation signs made which are predetermined through state and federal law. Other areas of fabrication may allow for some creative and independent thought on sign design. Work is normally received from a supervisor verbally, and checked for quality by inspection
of sign output. Supervision is not exercised in this class. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Selects sign blank, cleans with special chemical to insure adherence of ink/paint, secure silk screen, blend
and apply enamel ink to screen with a rubber applicator, repeats ink application until desired results are achieved.
On non-standard signs, select blank of appropriate size, cut plate to achieve sign, rounding corners where necessary, grind and buff plate to eliminate rough edges.
Consults the New York State Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices as needed to insure compliance
with statutory requirements when designing signs.
Designs signs with the use of computer assisted design software.
Fabricates signs with the use of automated sign cutting machinery.
Select and match ink colors to obtain the desired product, apply scotchlite to achieve reflective results.
Stamps letters used in making signs from a die cutting machine.
Design and layout of directly applied copies, symbols and boarders with heat activated adhesive insuring
correct spacing for hand lettering through the use of a lettering machine.
Cuts letters and numbers by hand from templets or with aide of the die-cutting machine.
Cleans screens used in making signs.
Layout, cuts and assembles silk screen.
Maintains equipment used in the fabrication of signs.
Maintains inventory of materials used in the fabrication of signs.
Mounts completed signs on posts
May fabricate signs with the use of automated sign cutting machinery.
May operate a small truck.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the standard tools, materials, techniques, methods and terminology used in sign
fabrication.
Working knowledge of ordering and inventory control of materials.
Skill in the application of silk screening techniques to projects and use of silk screening equipment
Ability to operate computer systems using Computer Assisted Design/Computer Assisted Manufacture
(CAD-CAM) in the fabrication of highway signs.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instruction.
Ability to maintain a good working relationship with fellow employees.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
One (1) year of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in metal fabrication or silk screening work, or in the use of Computer Assisted Design or Computer Assisted Manufacture (CAD/CAM).
Special Necessary Requirement
When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.
