SCHOOL BUS ATTENDANT SUPERVISOR 60890
The work involves responsibility for coordinating, supervising and directing the actions of school bus attendants involved with the safety of school children while loading, unloading or riding on school buses in a large school district. The work includes the responsibility for maintaining coverage on bus runs to and from school by scheduling and assigning work to all regular attendants and arranging for substitute coverage when needed. The incumbent will answer inquiries and investigate complaints from bus drivers, bus attendants, students and parents concerning problems on the school bus. Work is performed under general supervision from an administrative superior. Some latitude is exercised by the employee in handling and resolving problems related to areas of assignment. Supervision is exercised over a substantial number of school bus attendants. Work is reviewed through conferences and oral reports. Does related work as required.
Assigns school bus attendants for school bus runs, makes route assignment changes and contacts and arranges for substitute attendants as needed to insure that all students are transported safely to and from their homes.
Maintains contact with numerous departments, contractors and schools involved in the student transportation program to verify that attendants are performing their function in accordance with established rules and procedures.
Handles the recording and submission of school bus attendant's time cards and their payroll.
Interviews new applicants and provides pre-service and in-service training and orientation for newly employed school bus attendants.
Confers with parents or school representatives as needed to inform them of behavior problems during bus runs.
Makes field stops as needed to supervise the loading of buses where behavior problems have been reported.
Arranges meetings with parents of bused pupils and bus attendants when disciplinary problems on school buses dictate such a course of action.
Works with administrative personnel and police department personnel to resolve disciplinary problems that affect bused pupils.
Develops and implements procedures, programs and activities for InService for bus attendants designed to promote safe operation of school buses.
Assists in designing and implementing regular and special education bus routes and runs.
Assists in checking routes for hazards, safe stop placements, etc. before assignment of pupils.
Develops and implements appropriate programs that enhance on-bus safety and positive behavior.
Follows policies and procedures concerning the transportation of pupils according to safety regulations.
Prepares and disseminates appropriate reports.
Attends training sessions as required.
Assists in scheduling and routing students and school buses as requested.
May drive a school bus when required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of standard safety practices and procedures as applicable to student transportation programs.
Good knowledge of school bus routes in the district and the pick-up points and routing time schedules.
Good knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision.
Skill in the use of two-way radio equipment.
Ability to organize and schedule the activities of a substantial number of employees.
Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with subordinates, students, parents, bus drivers and school administrators.
Ability to supervise the work of others.
Ability to prepare and conduct training sessions.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely for radio and phone contact.
Ability to maintain records and prepares reports.
Two (2) years of work experience, or its part-time equivalent, in a clerical or technical capacity-involving student busing procedure in a school transportation program.
At Time of Appointment: When required to operate a school bus, candidates must possess a valid CDL class B with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsement motor vehicle license issued by the State of New York.
Upon completion of probation period: Completion of the Pupil Transportation Safety Institute School Bus Transportation Train the Trainer course (PTSI) or School Bus Driver Instructor course (SBDI).
