DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for leading and participating in a variety of semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of all facilities and equipment at a municipal airport. Work involves the operation and routine maintenance of motor and some heavy equipment in keeping runways, ramps and service areas free from safety hazards. As working crew leader, incumbent may lead a small crew of maintenance workers and is on call as assigned by the Airport Maintenance Crew Leader, to lead in, and participate in emergency and snow removal operations and to insure completion of all other duties as assigned by the Crew Leader. Does related work as required.
Leads and participates in the inspection of runways, taxiways and ramps for dangerous hazards such as holes, cracks, stones and particles of snow and ice.
Leads and participates in the operation of dump trucks, tractors, mowers, sweepers, sanders, snow removal equipment and other motor and heavy equipment.
Leads in and performs routine carpentry, painting, plumbing, heating and electrical work.
Acts as working crew leader by leading and participating with a small crew of maintenance workers on individual repair, construction and maintenance projects.
Leads and participates in routine grounds keeping work such as mowing grass, trimming trees and shrubs and seeding.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the practices, tools and materials used in large scale general maintenance and repair of airport buildings, roadways and grounds.
Skill in the use of hand tools and machinery used in keeping airport buildings, equipment and roadways in good repair.
Skill in at least one of the construction or mechanical trades or in motor equipment operation.
Ability to operate and maintain motor and heavy equipment used in airport maintenance work.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPEN COMPETITIVE:
A) Two (2) years of maintenance work, or its part-time equivalent, in one (1) or more of the building or mechanical trades; or,
B) Two (2) years of maintenance work, or its part-time equivalent, in property maintenance, landscaping, and/or snow-plowing, at least one (1) year must have been in airport maintenance.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT:
At time of appointment, possession of a valid Class A or Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle being operated.
