DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for performing semi skilled maintenance work in the removal and disposal of asbestos containing materials found within public buildings, offices and school structures. The work requires the successful completion of a training program that gives the employee the knowledge and method used in site preparation, respiratory protection, removal procedures, clean up and disposal techniques. The employee is required to undergo a job training program as mandated by New York State in all the knowledge areas necessary for them to deal with asbestos removal. Employees are required to work with hazardous materials. Assignments are received verbally from the Asbestos Removal Project Supervisor and work is inspected during progress and upon completion. The employee must adhere to the standards for removal and disposal of asbestos. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Vacuums and wash down walls and floors with a mop, bucket and water hose.
Staple, tack and tape plastic sheeting to framing strips, determine layers of sheeting to be used.
Uses appropriate protective clothing and respiratory protection while performing these duties.
Remove asbestos by wetting down the material and scraping from structure.
Deposit waste in polyurethane bags for disposal, and scrub building surfaces with sponges and wire brushes to insure the environment is free of asbestos fibers.
Removes filled bags through air lock and cleans bag before double bagging.
Performs glove bag asbestos removals around sections of piping that seal the section but allow for removal of the asbestos insulation by use of tools and vacuum attached or enclosed within the bag.
Constructs scaffolding to remove materials from high walls or ceilings.
May perform other assignments commensurate with this type of work.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions used in this type of work.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to undertake a formalized course of instruction in asbestos removal and passing the course test and to apply the training while on the job.
Ability to develop skill in the use and care of the tools, materials and equipment used in asbestos removal.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
There are no minimum qualifications.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENTS
AT TIME OF APPOINTMENT:
A) Candidates must possess a valid New York State Asbestos Handler Certification issued by the New York State Department of Labor, Division of Safety & Health.
B) Candidates must pass an OSHA pulmonary function test reviewed by a physician so that they are permitted to use respirators.
