DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for leading and participating in the cleaning and maintenance of sewer mains and lines. Under general supervision of a higher level employee responsible for sewer maintenance, an employee in this class leads and participates in a variety of specialized manual tasks related to the maintenance of sewer mains and lines. Work involves seeing that schedules are met and that adequate supplies and equipment are on hand for the work. Assignments are received from a higher level employee who reviews the work through inspection. Direct supervision is exercised over a small number of Sewer Maintenance Workers I, Motor Equipment Operators and Laborers. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Supervises and participates in the cleaning and maintenance of sewer mains and lines.

Supervises and participates in the inspection of all County Sewer lines and mains.

Operates and maintains all sewer equipment and tools including sewer-rodding equipment and jackhammer.

Drives truck transporting crew and equipment to and from the job.

Requisitions supplies and equipment.

Maintains daily time records.

Prepares and submits reports on work accomplished.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of the materials, equipment and methods commonly employed in cleaning and maintenance of sewer mains and lines.

Good knowledge of the hazards and necessary safety precautions in sewer maintenance work and in working under extreme weather conditions.

Some knowledge of effective supervisory techniques.

Skill in the use of tools.

Ability to assign and supervise the work of subordinates.

Ability and willingness to do heavy manual work and to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.

Ability to read and interpret sewer maps and plans.

Physical condition commensurates with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

One (1) year of full time work experience in the maintenance and cleaning of sewer mains and lines or one (1) year in the non-competitive class status as a Sewer Maintenance Worker I or six (6) months as a Closed Circuit Television Attendant.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

 

When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.
