DISTINGUISHING FETATRES OF THE CLASS
The work involves responsibility for reading and recording consumption readings from water or electric meters. Readings are taken from residential and industrial asters usually on an assigned route and must be accurate. Employees are trained in the reading of various asters and how to record the readings by a technical supervisor. Work is reviewed by submission of route logbooks and/or through customer response. Supervision is not exercised by an employee in this class. Certain assignments made to an employee in this class will require reasonable access to transportation to meet field work requirements in the ordinary course of business in a timely and efficient manner. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Reads domestic and commercial water or electric meters by viewing a series of numbers in line format or on a clock face display; records numbers into a route log book under the customers address or account number; subtracts readings from previous entries to determine consumption.
Checks for water leaks and waste through visual observation during the reading, or by visually checking connections within residences, such as sinks, toilets and faucets; makes simple written reports to maintenance section.
Prepares a simple written report of unusual circumstances found during readings indicating possible tampering, defective or damaged meters and excessive use of service.
Discusses with the customer any complaints of high bills, disputed readings, water pressure problems and suggests solutions as the situation requires.
May assist with the maintenance of customer account book by filing, replacing pages and related clerical tasks.
May, under supervision, install exterior meter receptacles by screwing fixtures to the side of the structure.
May encourage the customer to remit payments to avoid discontinuance of service; may close service at the
street shut off valve when required to terminate service.

Ability to read a clock type face or numerical line water or electric meter.
Ability to make simple mathematical computations by the use of addition and subtraction.
Ability to enter figures correctly, accurately and legibly.

Ability to work under extreme weather conditions.
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
