DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for leading, supervising and participating in a variety of semiskilled and preventive maintenance and operation procedures for pumps and auxiliary equipment at pump stations at a water distribution and transmission system. This is a supervisory position over a group of Pump Maintenance Workers, including assigning and participating in the work performed, and for insuring the preventive maintenance program for all equipment at pump stations. An employee in this class is also responsible to ensure the safe entry of all designated confined spaces as required by federal standards and to inspect, evaluate and assess potential hazardous or unsafe conditions associated to a particular job function. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Supervises, leads and participates in the work of pump maintenance workers.

Supervises the implementation and operation of the confined space entry program as mandated by federal OSHA requirements, including maintaining records, preparing reports, issuing permits for confined space entry, calibration of air monitoring equipment, and providing on-site directions and assistance.

Optimizes water pump system control by reviewing operations data with pump maintenance worker staff, distribution and maintenance staff, and through discussions with supervisory staff.

Operates pumps and control valves to maintain water tank levels and pressures to meet fluctuation in water demands.

Supervises and participates in the operation of valves and the flushing of water mains.

Oversees the operation of pumps, control valves, tanks and chemical booster stations.

Performs system and hydrant flow and metered consumption studies, pressure studies and pressure reducing studies.

Assists in cooperation with management staff, the scheduling of Pump Maintenance workers.

Tests and calibrates hydraulic measuring equipment used in pressure and flow studies.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of the function and operation of pumps, valves and mechanical equipment in a water transmission system.

Good knowledge of principals and practices of hydraulic engineering as applied to the operation of water pumping and transmission systems.

Good knowledge of the equipment and methods used in large-scale water distribution and pumping facilities.

Working knowledge of federal OSHA, Confined Space Entry procedures and requirements.

Working knowledge of principles and practices of supervision.

Ability to supervise, assign and lead subordinate staff as well as to plan and schedule their work.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, plans and maps as they relate to a water distribution system.

Ability to input, analyze and retrieve water system data from a computer terminal.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position, including the ability to stand, bend, and reach and to enter and exit confined spaces and pits on a routine basis.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Two (2) years of work experience, or its part time equivalent, in the operation and repair of electric pumps, compressors or auxiliary equipment in a water distribution/transmission system, wastewater treatment plant or similar setting.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT: When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle (s) being operated.
