DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for performing a variety of semi-skilled preventative maintenance and operation procedures for pumps and auxiliary equipment at pump stations and wastewater treatment plant facilities. An employee in this class has responsibility on an assigned shift, for maintaining the effective operation of pumps and auxiliary equipment through performance of tasks involved in a preventative maintenance program. Primary emphasis is given to procedures to ensure safe and efficient operation of a variety of pumps, compressors and auxiliary equipment. Assignments and direct supervision are received orally from charge operators. Between rounds, work is performed in accordance with established procedures and telephone communication. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Starts, adjusts and stops pumps, compressors and other auxiliary equipment and machinery.

Alternates pumps by opening and closing by-pass valves.

Maintains check on efficiency of equipment through observation and checking of gauges.

Cleans pumps and machinery; may make minor adjustments where required.

Makes reports in simple figure entry form on machinery efficiency for return to supervisor.

Checks and fills oil gauges on various pumps with proper lubricating agents.

May collect water and waste water samples when directed.

Performs minor repairs on equipment.

May operate a bulk collection truck when directed.

Performs miscellaneous custodial duties.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Some knowledge of the functions and operation principles of pumps, valves and other mechanical equipment.

Some knowledge of safety and precautions in work.

Ability to read and write.

Ability to understand and carry out simple oral and written instructions.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Six (6) months of work experience, or its part time equivalent, involved in the operation, maintenance or repair of electric pumps, compressors or auxiliary equipment.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

 

When required to operate motor vehicles, employees must possess a valid non-CDL or CDL with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle(s) being operated.
