DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for leading and participating in the cleaning and maintenance of streams. Under general supervision of a higher level employee responsible for stream maintenance, an employee of this class leads and participates in a variety of specialized manual tasks related to the maintenance and cleaning of streams, creeks and brooks within County drainage districts. Work involves seeing that schedules are met and that adequate supplies and equipment are on hand for the work. Assignments are received from a higher level employee who reviews the work through inspection. Direct supervision is exercised over a small number of Stream Maintenance Workers I, Motor Equipment Operators and Laborers. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Leads and participates in the inspection, maintenance and cleaning of streams, creeks and brooks within County drainage districts.

Assists in scheduling work and coordinating availability of supplies and equipment.

Performs inspection of streams daily, doing routine maintenance and cleaning and reporting on any problems encountered.

Operates and maintains all equipment used in stream maintenance, including power winches, chain saws, dump trucks, lawn tractors and related equipment.

Informs and advises subordinates of safe use of equipment and safe operating procedures.

Prepares and submits daily reports on inspection of sites and work accomplished.

Recommends equipment and tools needed for work tasks.

Drives truck transporting crew to and from job sites.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of the equipment and methods commonly employed in the maintenance and cleaning of streams.

Good knowledge of the hazards and necessary safety precautions in stream maintenance work.

Good knowledge of the operations and routine maintenance of stream maintenance equipment and tools, including dump trucks, tractors, chain saws and related equipment.

Skill in the operation and use of stream maintenance tools and equipment.

Ability to direct daily activities of stream maintenance crew.

Ability and willingness to do heavy manual work.

Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.

Ability to prepare simple written reports.

Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

One (1) year of work experience, or its part-time equivalent in the inspection and maintenance of streams or one (1) year in the non-competitive status as a Stream Maintenance Worker I or six (6) months in the non-competitive class status as a Motor Equipment Operator II within the Department of Drainage and Sanitation.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT

Possession of a Class A or Class B Commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements as required by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for the class of vehicle being operated.
