DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS

 

The work involves responsibility for performing all skilled operations in forming and finishing books from printed material. This is highly skilled work requiring manual dexterity to cut, sew, and glue components of books. The Records Preservation Supervisor exercises general supervision over an employee in this class through verbal instruction as to the general requirements of the job as opposed to directing specific binding techniques. Does related work as required.

 

TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES

 

Folds printed sheets to form signature (also known as sections) and gathers signatures into numerical order.

Sews or glues signatures and forms joints of book covers and book bodies.

Compresses by machines sewn together or glued together signatures of bodies to uniform thickness.

Trims by cutters or machine edges of books.

Rounds, backs, and grooms back edges of books by machine to prepare the book for covering.

Glues back of books to attach backing and headboard.

Applies mixed or solid colors to signatures.

Fabricates back covers by cutting material to size and gluing cover material to back.

Replaces plastic covers on the compact books.

Copies damaged pages and replaces in books.

Glues endsheets to covers.

Imprints titles on book.

Rebuilds damaged or used books.

Determines supplies needed and inventories same.

May instruct vault attendant and messenger in regard to preservation of county clerk documents, folders, boxes, etc.

 

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS

 

Good knowledge of principles, practices, safety precautions, tools, equipment, and supplies used in bookbinding.

Skill in binding books by hand and with tools and machines.

Mechanical aptitude.

Ability to determine methods and materials to perform work in a cost-effective manner.

Physical condition commensurate with the demand of the position.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Two (2) years of experience, or its part time equivalent, in bookbinding operations.
